Trump action to quash hopes of Dreamers is cruel, bad policy

Lamar Smith calls on getting tough on children brought into America

Today, Donald Trump put politics above good policy by moving to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. Rather than giving Congress time to legislate President Obama’s work visa program for undocumented immigrates brought to the country as children, Trump has kotowed to his anti-immigrant base, putting 800,000 productive members of our communities at risk of deportation.

The Dreamers affected by this action came to the U.S. as children and many of them have no memory of their country of origin, do not speak the language, and no longer have family there. It would be cruel and unjust to ship them away from the home they have known for years.

The ball is now in Congress’ court, but we will do nothing to help these members of our community if Congressman Lamar Smith has his say. Smith gleefully supported the move saying “President Trump is right not to continue the DACA program” and called for a get tough approach to immigration.

There is vast bi-partisan support for DACA because it makes sense and is the right thing to do. Trump and Smith have turned their backs on these Dreamers, and their future will only be secure with a new Congress in 2018!
